2013 Presenter Interest

Happy new year!

I hope this post finds you enjoying a great year so far and making lots of time to write. Remember, this day we write! Not just this day we think about maybe making time one of these days to write. :)

It's around this time of year that my inbox gets flooded with interest from people who would love to present at SiWC, and many of them have the same questions. So here, in no particular order, are answers to some of the frequently asked questions from interested potential presenters:

All presenters for SiWC are invited in writing via email by the conference coordinator on behalf of the SIWC Board. This is true both for new and repeat presenters.

We do accept proposals, but do not put out a call for them or have a deadline. They're a good way for us to find out about great presenters we may not otherwise have known about, but we are very lucky to have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to people who'd like to present at SiWC, so we don't actively solicit proposals. If you'd like to send one, I accept them by email throughout the year for consideration by the board when we have openings. It is most helpful for writers to include both teaching and publishing experience as well as where they're located (a budget consideration) and what they're interested in teaching. For agents, editors, and publishers, whether you're interested in teaching at all is helpful to know as well as agency/company information, what you represent/publish, and where you're located.

Please note that we receive a huge number of proposals. I will acknowledge receipt of your proposal, but after that you will not hear back unless the board is able to offer an invitation. It can take several years from proposal to invitation.

If you have just been published for the first time, we strongly suggest getting your feet wet at festivals and small conferences to build your experience before submitting a proposal to SiWC. We are committed to bringing in the best teachers we can find, so experience counts!

I hope that helps! If you have additional questions, chances are someone else does, too. Please feel free to post in the comments below.

We're already hard at work planning SiWC 2013. Keep an eye on our site for information in the coming months!

You should totally invite A.S. King to Surrey! Her views/attitudes/posts on writing kind of saved me this past year. And her books--aMAZing! :)
