Many thanks to all who applied for our first SiWC Diversity Scholarship. The applications were amazing: smart, touching, funny, heartfelt, and well-written. We had a tough time picking just one, but of course we had to do exactly that.
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that the first ever winner of the SiWC Diversity Scholarship is Kristina Shelden.
With Kristina's permission, we're sharing a piece of her application letter with you:
I don’t want to dream anymore. I want to do.
I would absolutely love to attend these workshops. I want to meet authors, agents, editors and fellow aspiring writers. Above all, I want to learn. I want to soak up what this conference has to offer and start setting up my future. I’ve been frightened for a while now. Frightened about what I can do, what I can become, and how I’m going to take care of myself as I grow older with a disability.
The sparkling, crystal, certainty I’ve realized is: I want to be a writer.
We're excited to welcome her at SiWC.
We couldn't have offered this scholarship this year without the generous anonymous donation that kicked it off. It looks like the additional donations our attendees made at registration will make it possible for us to offer it again in future years. Thank you to all who've contributed or plan to. We appreciate you more than you know!
Congratulations again, Kristina!
