A quick note that if you have a question that needs to be asked...please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Really...I answer any and all questions. But if you really, really, really need the school district...the number has changed.
It is now:
604-587-2315. Ask for Robin.
Keep an eye on the blog for changes -- the number will likely change back as of September 1.
Contest entries are coming in fast and furious now, with the deadline approaching the one week mark. [September 4th -- have you sent YOUR entry in yet???]
A question arose today about appropriate language usage for our contest, and I thought it might be a good subject to address here in the blog.
At the SiWC writing contest, we do not censor.
Language is our business...and yours.
Use whatever words you need in whatever way you need them to tell your story.
Then...send them in to us! Contest details HERE.

For all the local Surrey writers....you will remember Ed is the founder of the Surrey International Writers' Conference. Here is his new endeavour!
You’ve probably heard that Surrey Schools has cancelled all continuing education course for adults. No more guitar classes, Spanish conversation, Punjabi cooking and Creative Writing.
Our creative writing program was the best in the lower mainland. People came from Burnaby, Vancouver, Abbotsford, Port Coquitlam and other communities to take our courses. We are not going to let it die. We have started our own non-profit writers’ school, called Surrey Writers’ School. Instead of going to your local school, in many cases you will find our courses at your local library.
It’s essential that we succeed and...
Three weeks today, my pretties.

Lots going on these days at SiWC central. While the rest of you are sweltering, basking (or freezing...this is a Canadian summer, after all) out there, we are hard at work behind the scenes getting things ready for the conference.
A quick note -- the school district (who answers our phones) is down to a pretty skeleton staff over the summer, so if you want to register and can't get through to someone who can help you, just drop me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll see what I can do.
On to the news:
Long time presenter and friend of the conference Don McQuinn has a wonderful new endeavour on the go. His new site is here: http://www.wiredwriters.net/ and Don and his team aim to make it the best go-to...
After three years in the job, I will be retiring as SiWC conference coordinator at the end of our event this year, and our Board is currently engaged in the process of looking for someone who would like to take on the position. This job has been a labour of love for me, and I will continue to maintain a strong association with the conference, but it's time for some new blood at the helm. I'm hoping you, our devoted blog readers, will help me spread the word so we can find the perfect person to take on the challenge. If you, or someone you know, is interested in this position, you can contact SiWC Board member Carrie Higgins by email at email@example.com as she is charged with overseeing the questions of applicants interested in the job. But to give you a general idea, the...
This fall season is going to be amazing in the book world. A motherlode of books from bestselling authors are appearing this year -- and we've got some of the biggest names coming to our conference!
This year will bring new books from Jack Whyte, Diana Gabaldon, Michael Slade, Robert Dugoni...and more. (Including a new kc dyer book...have I mentioned that one, yet?)
But don't just take my word for it...when in doubt, turn to the BookNinja!

This is the first in a series of guest blogs we'll be presenting here at SiWC blog central, leading up to our conference in October.
Today we welcome presenter Darren Barefoot, who will return this fall as one of our social media experts. Darren and his partner Julie are also the freshly-minted authors of their own new book, emerging this fall. I'll give you a head's up when it hits the shelves.
In this post, Darren not only shares a few tips on Social Media Marketing, but also offers a discount code for SiWC blog readers who want to take his marketing course!
(Full disclosure: I'll be taking the course this week...and not only that, I plan to sneak into the back of Darren's workshops at SiWC 2009!)
So, without further ado, here are a few words from...
We're always looking for 'em -- our conference could not exist without our volunteers! We love them as the dragon loves his gold horde...
as the eagle loves her sushi...
as the librarian loves his first editions...
So when I read THIS today on BookNinja George's blog, I realized it was a Must Link.
You too can become a Literary Escort, with all the pleasures that might entail.
All you need to do is ask...
PS The person to ask is our volunteer coordinator Camille Netherton. You can find her under the 'Contact Us' tab on the menu...
Your name was drawn from the hat as winner of THIS contest.
The point of the contest (for those who may have forgotten) was to garner a list of the names of presenters who have inspired your pens and won your hearts over the years at the Surrey International Writers' Conference.
The entries were drawn from names submitted to the comments section, and a most interesting selection we had. But I confess to a secret surge of delight when Jenny's name came out of the hat...anyone who can rhyme 'pseudonym' with 'nude in 'em'
...well, she's a star in my book.
We had a number of incredible entries. Thanks to all who entered -- check 'em out...
