Just added a couple of presenters to our roster ...faces both new and familiar. Here's a quick profile of each!
First the new...agent April Eberhardt, from Reece-Halsey North in San Francisco:
April joined Reece Halsey North as a Literary Agent in 2008 after five years of editorial work with Zoetrope: All-Story, a literary magazine, and another agency. Her specialty is adult commercial and literary fiction, particularly contemporary urban fiction, ironic family dramas and realistic midlife tales, often with a twist, preferably involving strong female characters. She is attracted to collections of interlinked stories with a common character or theme. An original voice and smart, speedy delivery are critical, as is a subtle sense of the absurd.
It's that time again -- time for making connections and new friends who are vehicle-generous!
If you are looking to share a ride to SiWC 2009, this is the place to be. Leave your message in the comments, and help save the planet when you save a little gas!
Let me open up the bidding with Andrea Simmonds of Friday Harbour, WA. Andrea has a lift to the conference, but she needs a ride home. If you'll be driving that way, you can contact her at as4444 [at] centurytel [dot] net
Now it's your turn. Able to give Andrea a lift or want to share with someone else? Leave your name in the comments. Let's all arrive at SiWC safely...and in style!

Okay -- we survived contest deadline week and have now plunged into Labour Day, back-to-school madness. Part of that madness for me this year includes the first SiWC Road Show.
For the last week of September, (and the first couple of days of October) I'll be hitting every Lower Mainland secondary and post-secondary institution of learning that will have me, talking about SiWC. Topics include why you should come, who you will meet, what you will gain from this intense weekend, and JUST WHAT IS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT ANYWAY?
These guys will not be driving the car.
If, by chance, you'd like me to come and visit YOUR writing group, creative writing class, English faculty, Arts Department or whatever collective noun you belong to... well, I would...
...as the SiWC Writing Contest draws to a close for 2009.
It's apres midnight here in the Eastern Daylight Savings Zone, but two full hours and a few stray minutes remain in good old Pacific Daylight Time, so the last few entries needs must trickle in soonishly, or be relegated to next year.
Send those entries in!
Email is your only hope now... firstname.lastname@example.org is the address. Once the last notes of midnight ring through, the race to judgement day begins!

You think Jack Bauer feels the pressure in his save-the-world-in-24-hours schtick?
Let's give that man a taste of what the last 24 hours before the SiWC writing contest deadline and see how he copes. I bet he'd be crying like a little girl.
I had to be off-line today to travel to the other side of the country. I opened my computer tonight to nearly 100 emails, most of which were contest-related.
You've got 24 hours, people. The contest closes tomorrow. Get your entries in! As long as the story is submitted under the wire, it's okay if your entry fee is a few days late.
The fastest way? Submit by email. Details are on the site at www.siwc.ca, but the gist is this:do NOT send story as an...
Planning to enter our writing contest? You need to get a move on!
Details are HERE.
The deadline is almost upon us... this Friday, September 4th, 2009. But fear not! You too can get your writing contest entry in by email!
Just submit it to email@example.com, drop your cheque in the mail, and all will be well.
But just in case it's a help, here are the answers to a few of the questions I've been fielding recently:
I plan to submit a short story as well as a poem. Should I combine both in one email, or send two emails, one for each category?
One email for both submissions is fine. Just state at the top there are...
A quick note that if you have a question that needs to be asked...please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Really...I answer any and all questions. But if you really, really, really need the school district...the number has changed.
It is now:
604-587-2315. Ask for Robin.
Keep an eye on the blog for changes -- the number will likely change back as of September 1.
Contest entries are coming in fast and furious now, with the deadline approaching the one week mark. [September 4th -- have you sent YOUR entry in yet???]
A question arose today about appropriate language usage for our contest, and I thought it might be a good subject to address here in the blog.
At the SiWC writing contest, we do not censor.
Language is our business...and yours.
Use whatever words you need in whatever way you need them to tell your story.
Then...send them in to us! Contest details HERE.
Questions? Leave 'em in the comment section here, or email me at email@example.com

For all the local Surrey writers....you will remember Ed is the founder of the Surrey International Writers' Conference. Here is his new endeavour!
You’ve probably heard that Surrey Schools has cancelled all continuing education course for adults. No more guitar classes, Spanish conversation, Punjabi cooking and Creative Writing.
Our creative writing program was the best in the lower mainland. People came from Burnaby, Vancouver, Abbotsford, Port Coquitlam and other communities to take our courses. We are not going to let it die. We have started our own non-profit writers’ school, called Surrey Writers’ School. Instead of going to your local school, in many cases you will find our courses at your local library.
It’s essential that we succeed and...
