SiWC Director [and volunteer coordinator] Christine Dalzell has contributed the following post to pass on a word of thanks to all of our marvellous volunteers.

April 21 to 27 is National Volunteer Week, a time to recognize and celebrate the incredible efforts of Volunteers across Canada. SiWC is almost entirely run by volunteers and we, the organizing Board along with our Conference Coordinator, Administrative Coordinator and Webmaster, want to send a shout out to the over 70 dedicated volunteers who make our conference possible. Some of our volunteers have been with us since the early days of the conference and each year new, enthusiastic volunteers enter our roster. Volunteers are scheduled for as much time as they wish and, for some, that amounts to 12 hour days...

Ursula and Carol

The members of the Surrey International Writers' Conference Society would like to wave a fond adieu to two of our community who retired at the end of the year.

Ursula Maxwell Lewis was one of the founders of SiWC and has been a part of our community ever since those long-ago days. While we all love the energy and verve Ursula brought to the conference, her fellow conference founder Carol Monaghan perhaps knows her best of all.  Carol says:

One of the essential elements of SiWC is making connections and one of my best Conference connections was meeting Ursula. I first worked with Ursula twenty years ago when that magnetic fella named Ed Griffin drew several of us together to help plan a writers’ conference. As soon as I met her, I knew she was a woman who combined her...

Happy new year!

I hope this post finds you enjoying a great year so far and making lots of time to write. Remember, this day we write! Not just this day we think about maybe making time one of these days to write. :)

It's around this time of year that my inbox gets flooded with interest from people who would love to present at SiWC, and many of them have the same questions. So here, in no particular order, are answers to some of the frequently asked questions from interested potential presenters:

All presenters for SiWC are invited in writing via email by the conference coordinator on behalf of the SIWC Board. This is true both for new and repeat presenters.

We do accept proposals, but do not put out a call for them or have a deadline. They're a good way...

Jack Whyte

SiWC's own inimitable Jack Whyte is having surgery today.

Our lovely kc dyer blogged about it here:

(she links to Jack's own blog on the subect there, too.)

If you're on Twitter, please join us today in sending good thoughts to Jack. @kcdyer would love to see us get the hashtag #LovetoJackWhyte trending. If you'd like to join in, simply add that phrase (including the #, if you're new to hashtags) to your tweet.

Not on Twitter? Jack's blog is open to comments, and so, of course, is ours.

Lots of love to Jack from all of us here, or, as they say on Twitter, #LovetoJackWhyte

Did you attend SiWC this year? Did you miss getting a handout at your favourite workshop?

Some of our presenters' handouts are now available to SiWC 2012 attendees only, posted on a password-protected page you'll find here:

The username for the page is siwc, and the password is our MC's favourite word from this year's...

Link love

Hello, all!

We're finally emerging from the post-conference fog here at SiWC Central. Hard to believe SiWC is behind us for another year. We had a great time this year, and from all we've read, it appears you did, too.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. More than anything else, it is the PEOPLE who make SiWC special. The part of our conference of which we're consistently the most proud is the atmosphere. And you, my friends - attendees, presenters, staff, volunteers, trade show participants, book fair participants and everyone else - are what make that happen. Thank you for coming ready to learn, to share what you know, to connect and converse and share a drink in the bar or a meal in the ballroom. Thank you for being attentive and open to new ideas, for taking questions...

Shari Green

Ever wonder about the fellow attendees you might meet at SiWC? One of them, Shari Green, was kind enough to do this lovely guest post for us today to share a bit of her experience as a writer and SiWC attendee. Check it out!

As I write this, rain is thrumming on my roof and lashing the autumn-bright leaves of the maple in the back yard. It’s the first real rain of the season. (I mean “real rain” in the coastal sense…we’ve had mist and drizzle, but this is the first day of no-end-in-sight downpour since late June.) It’s lovely: fresh, cleansing, life-giving. As much as I adore summer sunshine, there’s nothing like serious coastal rain to sweep the dust-bunnies from my soul.

Looking at the forecast, it will likely still be raining when I leave for the Surrey...

With just one week until SiWC, it's time for our annual ride share blog!

Like our annual room share blog, this one's all about the comments. Looking for someone to share a ride from the airport or the ferry terminal? Post in the comments. Want to carpool from other parts of YVR? Post that, too.

It's helpful to say whether you are looking to share a cab, be a carpool driver or be a carpool passenger as well as where you'll be coming from (airport, ferry, area of town) and what day and approximate time. Please be smart about your safety. Don't post your address or flight number or other specifics here. We provide this comment trail for your convenience by popular request, but we don't know many of...
