Bits and Pieces

Have you been spotting hints about our Saturday Night Owl event at various places SiWC board members and I pop up around the web? We’re being pretty subtle, I must admit, but keep watching. I think I might just offer a prize to the first person who puts the clues together and solves the mystery. Yes, I think I will. Keep watching and see if you can figure it out before I tell you one of these days… if you think you have it, email me at kathychung at siwc dot ca. I'll post the winning entry - if there is one - here on the blog.

In conference news, we’ve added a title for Jack Whyte’s previously “TBD” master class. If you’ve been waiting to see what he was going to teach before you registered, now’s your chance. In “Le Mot Just”, he’ll delve into the subtle but important idea of rhythm and flow in your use of language. Word choice isn’t just about accuracy, but about the feel and sound of your prose, and that’s a huge part of what creates that unique voice agents and publishers are always on the lookout for. Come explore how to make your prose sing exactly the sort of song you want it to. This class is limited to 20 participants. Space remains, but don’t wait too long!

Another good news story to share! Attendee and former writing contest winner Stasia Kehoe sent us this: “Hi there. Just thought it might be fun to let you know that my book, AUDITION, which won the SIWC Writing for Young People prize as a short story in 2008, will be published as a verse novel by Viking in Spring 2012.” Congratulations, Stasia! We love hearing good news stories from our attendees, so keep them coming.

First words from KC [Kathy Chung] via kc...

With the memories of SiWC 2009 still fresh in our minds, we're turning our attention to re-creating the SiWC magic in 2010.

Want to keep up with our news as we go along? I'll be blogging here, of course, and so will kc.

We also have a brand new Twitter stream @SiWCtweets. Follow us there for up-to-the-minute information about the conference, our presenters, and whatever other SiWCish content catches our eyes.

If you're already following us @siwc2009, note that we'll be retiring that stream soon, so @SiWCtweets is your new source of conference information on Twitter.

It's Coming...

Hello from London!

I've been on a little research/relaxation trip to the UK* and am heading home tomorrow, but I wanted to put a post up to let you know that all systems are go for the conference this year -- and the website update is underway. You'll be seeing the changes any day, and that includes the announcement of our registration date. While I can't tell you the exact date as yet, I can tell you it will be soon -- this month for sure, and if we can get all our systems in place, VERY soon.

It's one year ago today that we started this blog, and I think these two big pieces of news are reason to celebrate... how about a contest?

We have an incredible line-up for you this year, which will soon be available for all to see here on the website. But for our contest, let's look back for a moment. Who was your favourite presenter at an SiWC event over the past 16 years...and why? Give us the presenter's name and your description of why they were your favourite in 50 words or less, and put it in the comment section. We'll put your name in a hat and make the draw on June 16th -- that's two weeks from today. And for a bonus, if you link back to this post in a blog post or tweet of your own -- we'll add your name to the hat a second time.

Winner will get a collection of books provided by our conference attendees, AND a package of something sweet from Britain.

So tell us your favourites -- and spread the word. SiWC 2009 is coming sooner than you think!
