Apologies for the Technical Difficulties...

...but we are almost ready to upload photographic evidence of SiWC 2008!

In the meantime, a note for those in and around the Vancouver area, looking for a shopping suggestion or two this weekend:

HERE is a link to my Flickr page with the poster advertising A Triple Author Event this weekend at Once Upon a Huckleberry Bush bookstore in Vancouver. The three authors, all alumni of the 2008 conference (and one of whom is perhaps Very Well Known to readers of this blog) will be handing out candy canes and signing books.

In an interview from the North Pole, a jolly man in a red suit was quoted as saying, "My elves may not get toys made in time for Christmas. They are too busy reading."

This holiday season, why not follow the elves' example by giving the gift of storytelling?
Together for the first time, three of BC's most popular children's authors are promoting adventure, history and magic for all ages at:

Writing For Young People -- Contest Winners

And now, an excerpt or two from our SiWC 2008 Contest winners in the Writing For Young People category. But first, here's a word about our judges:

Shelley Hrdlitschka

Shelley is the best-selling author of 8 books for teens. She has released two new books this year, Gotcha! and Sister Wife. Shelley lives and writes in Deep Cove. She is this year’s recipient of the SiWC Surrey Board of Trade Special Achievement Award.

 James McCann

Growing up on the icy plains of Manitoba, James McCann spent most of his time as a teen reading comics and playing Dungeons and Dragons. Both of these hobbies taught him his storytelling tools that he now uses as an author and creative writing instructor. He is the author of Rancour (first released in 2005 with a second edition due in
2008), Pyre (2007), and Dawn (Christmas 2008).
Before turning to mentoring youth in creative writing, he worked in children’s bookstores for seven years. Unlike the creatures of the night of which he writes, he lives peacefully in the daylight with his Shih Tzu, Conan. You can learn more
about him at www.jamesmccann.info

And now -- the excerpts!

Honourable mention:

October Storm
by Hélène Boudreau

“Cripes, Logan. What the hell were you thinking?” Logan’s father slapped his hat into his hand.

A patient in the nearby bed looked up from his tray table. Logan sunk deep into his pillows and brought the sheets up to his chest. The harsh scent of industrial laundry soap caught in his throat and threatened to overwhelm him.

James McCann Video on Writing

James McCann recently spoke at Vancouver's Summer Dream Literary Arts Festival and I was there to catch him on video (and in turn was caught on film by kc: Summer Dream Redux)!

James speaks on the techniques he uses to create his stories drawing from his past and real world items to create new characters and landscapes. Most fascinating for me is how he "riffs" off occurrences in his daily life. Instead of getting pissed off that his cover artist used a $30,000 guitar his main character couldn't think of owning he was inspired to find a way of including it in the story.

Prices Now Posted!

This is YA author James McCann. He will be joining Lee Edward Fodi to team-teach a Master Class on writing for children on Octobr 23rd this year. But presently, he is on the road with your humble blogging scribe, selling his books and talking about writing for kids and teens on the 'Rocky Mountain Chocolate & Chat Tour'. He and I are up to much no good as we hie eastward in search of the perfect piece of chocolate...or the perfect tour experience, whichever comes first.

All this to say, I am a leetle behind on posting exciting news here...but I have some for you now. The prices are up on the registration page. Our costs have gone up a little this year (flying our presenters in to the conference is a big part of this), but we have tried to keep our prices as low as possible to present attendees with the best value possible.

Don't forget registration begins July 17, 2008. We'll let you know the opening time as soon as we do -- or mere seconds afterward, certainly.

Questions? Fill out our comment form on the site, or email kcdyer@siwc.ca and I'll do my best to answer 'em.

Schedule Overview is Up, and a Little Master Teasing ensues...

Now that our remarkable list of presenters is available on the site, we're getting many questions about this year's content. What workshops will be on offer? Which panels will be available to choose from? Who will the keynote speakers be this year?

Fear not -- step one of the scheduling process is now complete. If you check over at the menu on the right, you'll see a new button for 'Conference Overview'. Our WebWizard has spent long hours re-working the code for this new section, and it's now up and running. The next step is to begin loading the more than 70 workshops, panels, keynotes and more that will be on offer at the conference this year.
