siwc 2010

Missed Handouts?

Did you miss getting a handout in one of your workshops at SiWC 2010 this year? You may be in luck!

Some of our SiWC 2010 presenters have provided us with digital copies of their handouts so you can get the ones you missed. If the one you're looking for isn't there, chances are it's available directly from the presenter on his or her website - check them out!

Our handout page is here: http://www.siwc.ca/presnotes/index.html It's a password-protected page for SiWC attendees only. The user name is siwc. Take a wild stab at what Chris Mathieson presentation topic is the (two words together as one) password, but if trying to figure it out makes you see red dots in front of your eyes, email me at the usual - kathychung at siwc dot ca - and I'll send it to you.

Psst... SiWC 2010 In Pictures

Looking to relive a little of the excitement of SiWC 2010? Wish you'd been able to go, and wonder what it was like?

Thanks to our resident shutter bug, Ursula Maxwell-Lewis, photos from this year's conference are now up on our site here: http://www.siwc.ca/photos

Attendee Carol Garvin has added a few shots to our Facebook page, too. You'll find them here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Surrey-BC/Surrey-International-Writers-Conference-SiWC/343986316665?v=photos

Do you have photos to share? We'd love to see them!

SiWC 2010 by Shilo Hebert

A couple of days ago, we brought you SiWC thoughts from one of our longest-serving board members; today, I have a few from one of our newest. Shilo has been with the conference for some time, volunteering and being a part of things, but she was a new face on our board this year, joining Camille in the mammoth task of volunteer wrangling, which she managed to do while finishing nursing school and starting a brand new job. Pretty impressive! Here are some of her thoughts on SiWC in her own words:

As I sit down to write this, I am still feeling overwhelmed by my experiences at SiWC 2010. The conference is always incredible, but this year seemed extra special. At the end of the weekend, I was exhausted, but more creatively energized than ever. From the feedback I have heard, I’m not the only one who was inspired.

It was impossible to attend all of the fabulous workshops and events happening this year, but I heard great things all around. Of the workshops and events I had the opportunity to attend, there were a few that really stood out. Ivan Coyote’s keynote on Saturday morning and her Bootcamp for Procrastinators workshop were powerful. I will certainly be cultivating my “inner ass” and practicing her procrastination busting tips this year (more on kicking the procrastination bug later).

I must admit that the RN in me really enjoyed the Blood Spatter Night Owl and learning how far arterial spurt will actually travel if unimpeded (7 to a maximum of 16 inches for those of you who are curious). Kudos to Chris for answering some detailed and gory questions from the audience without missing a beat.

SiWC 2010 by Carol Monaghan

SiWC's beloved MC, shown here sporting a lovely tiara instead of deely boppers or devil horns - she is mutli-faceted, our Carol - has put together some thoughts about SiWC 2010 for you. You may not know that in addition to being the best MC in the history of MCs (and if you've been to SiWC, you KNOW that's an accurate assessment of her talents), Carol is also an original SiWC board member, one of the core of people who've been around since the very earliest days of our conference.

Thank You!

It's Tuesday afternoon, and I am finally coming out of the post-conference fog. Sort of.

SiWC 2010 is over, the hotel lobby is back to being a hotel lobby, and all our attendees and presenters have gone, back to their families and lives and other commitments.

Thank you to all our attendees for coming, for sharing your ideas, for helping to create the warm, friendly atmosphere we all love so much at SiWC. Several presenters commented to me about the great attendees we have, and I agree.

Do you have pictures and stories from this year that you'd like to share? We'd love to see and hear them. Share links here in the comments or email me at kathychung at siwc dot ca.

Spotlight on... FILM

Spotlight on… is a new blog feature we’ll be running over the next few weeks, introducing you to some of the great stuff we have going on for writers in every field. Many of our workshops are terrific for many different types of writers, but for this feature, we’re pulling out just a few examples of what we have specifically for you among our 70 workshops. If you know someone who writes what we’re spotlighting, please give them the link. Remember, our early bird registration prices are in place until the end of the day on September 30.

First up, FILM.

Attention, screenwriters and filmmakers! This year’s SiWC has a LOT to offer you. Check it out!

On Thursday, Sleepless in Seattle writer    Jeff Arch, who hasn’t stopped working since his breakout script, brings us a master class on Professional Screenwriting. Last year, one of our attendees described Jeff’s workshop as “worth the price of admission all by itself”, so we’re delighted to offer this master class this year. During the regular conference, Friday to Sunday, Jeff will also be offering two more workshops on scripts.

New to SiWC this year are two more great film-related teachers.

Saturday night just got even more interesting...

<rubbing hands together in glee>

Had a VERY interesting meeting today. Three of us from SiWC sat down for an enjoyable hour with the person who's going to be bringing us a Saturday Night Owl event this year. I can't wait to see what he has in store. It's going to be great!

I'll leave his identity a mystery for now, but if you're keeping an eye on us in other internet places, you may already have seen a clue or two...

Registration notes and "Oops! I wish I'd..."

What a wonderful first week of registration it's been. We're thrilled to see registrations streaming in. Thank you! If you're planning to sign up, and have your eye on a particular agent or author to sit down with, don't wait too long for your best chance of getting the appointment you want. Slots are filling up. Did you know you get to pick your own appointment times when you register? That way, you'll know exactly when and with whom you're meeting from the moment you submit your registration.

Already signed up, but realized after the fact that you really want to take that master class you were contemplating? Registered for conference basic and then got talking with former attendees about how much networking goes on at the banquet meals? We can add master classes to your registration or upgrade you to a full conference package no problem as long as space is available. Just email me (kathychung at siwc dot ca) and we'll make the addition.

Finally, we're pleased to announce the addition of poet Bernice Lever to our presenter roster this year. Her bio will be up soon, and she'll be available for blue pencil appointments on our registration system, too.

Off to a Terrific Start

Wow! What a day we've had here at SiWC Central! Registration is off to a roaring start, and we are absolutely thrilled. Thank you to everyone who helped get us started on such an exciting note.

So far (touch wood), there's only on casualty to report in all the excitement: my credit card. See what I'll sacrifice for you people? No, really, I used it this morning to test the system to make sure you'd be able to register when we opened at noon, and I made the mistake of leaving it on an end table in a location easily accessible to my eight-month-old puppy. So I got to phone the credit card company and say, "My dog ate my credit card." I had a good laugh about it, though the woman on the phone was Very Serious.

Registrations are coming in quickly. For the best chance at your first choice of pitch and blue pencil appointments, register early!

Workshops up!

Welcome to June. Registration opens tomorrow at noon!

A large number of our workshops are now posted under the conference menu on the left. This is NOT a complete list; we still have a few to add, but many of them are there now so you can get a good idea of what to expect this October. Have a look!
