Surrey International Writers' Conference Newsletter
From the krumpled cranium of kc dyer:
Registration for SiWC 2008 is now open. Our goal was to have things up and running by noon yesterday (July 17th), and in fact, we actually got things in motion about 15 minutes ahead of schedule. We had a couple of glitches to iron out, but all is now running like a high-test hamster wheel.
Staffing at the school district is a little tight over the summer, so it's our hope that you'll register on-line instead of over the phone. If you have any problems, just drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org . Or, if you must, you can call the school district at 604-587-2302 until August 22, 2008. After August 25th, the phone number changes to 604-594-2000. Hours are between 8:30 am and 4 pm, Monday through Friday.
Our brochure is going to the printers this week, and if you'd like a copy, you can request one by clicking on the request link on the website and filling out the required information. Bear in mind that the brochure is an abbreviated version of the material on the website itself, so just checking out your options for workshops, panels and all the other myriad of things to do at the conference is best done on-line.
Now -- a word about Master Classes. This year we are offering 6 of these little beauties, all held on Thursday, October 23, 2008 -- a day before the conference formally starts. (You can find them on our website here). But right now, registration is only open for five of these classes, because the class being taught by Jack Whyte is being handled just a little differently from the rest. To get into Jack's class you must be invited. And to get that invitation, you must follow his instructions, (found on the website here and submit an excerpt of a story for him to read. He will select a mere 12 mortals to join in his class, and each will be notified in time to register and attend. So for now, if you'd like to register for any of the other five Master Classes, go right ahead. We'll handle the registrations for Jack's class later in the year.
One other quick announcement. I'm sorry to say that Little Brown editor Nancy Conescu has found herself unable to attend our conference this year, however she is sending the able and wonderful Julie Sheina (an associate editor with Little Brown) in her place. This change has been made on our registration page, so you'll be able to book time with Julie if you'd like an appointment with her.
We try to minimize changes like this to our schedule, but sometimes things get in the way, and we work hard to make the best conference experience possible for all our attendees.
If you take a look at the snazzy sidebar on our site, you'll see that we've passed the magic 5-0 number in our count-down to the SiWC Writing Contest deadline. Only 49 writing days left to get your entries in! We've got entries coming in already -- make sure you get yours in on time to qualify for over $4000 in prizes. Deadline is September 5th and details are on the site here: Writing Contest.
Enjoy your summer, keep writing -- and if you have any questions, you know where to find me: email@example.com
See you soon!
