Surrey International Writers' Conference Newsletter
From conference coordinator Kathy:
Lots of news here from the above-ground offices of SiWC Central. I’ve wrenched the computer back out of kc’s mouldy fingers – did no one tell her to wash her hands after cleaning between her toes? – and locked the door to the dungeon so I can fill you in on a whole bunch of great stuff we have going on and a couple of roster changes.
First of all, have you noticed our brand new master class addition? James Scott Bell, author of the excellent PLOT AND STRUCTURE as well as THE ART OF WAR FOR WRITERS, REVISION & SELF EDITING and numerous novels, has joined our presenter roster for this year. His master class, Next Level Fiction, promises to be a great one, perfect for those of you looking to take your writing, well, to the next level. If you have already registered and would like to add Next Level Fiction to your registration, email me.
Also joining us this year is book reviewer, librarian, and writer Jeff Ayers. Jeff will be bringing his moderating skills to some of our panels this October, and we’re very pleased to have him.
Long-time SiWC regulars Donald Maass and Lisa Rector have had to withdraw from participating in this year’s conference. They regret not being able to come, but instead of flying to Surrey, they’ll be winging their way to Ethiopia for a court date to adopt a 2 1/2 year old boy. We’re sorry to lose them this year, but are absolutely thrilled that their plans for a family are coming together. We wish them all the best, and hope to see them – and their son – at SiWC in the future.
In Don Maass’s stead, we are delighted to welcome Maass Agency agent Cameron McClure. Cameron has been with the Maass Agency since 2004.
Pitch appointments currently scheduled with Don Maass will be taken by Cameron McClure. If you would prefer to switch to another available agent, please respond to the email you’ll receive from me about this.
I will be contacting each of you who is registered in Don’s Elements of Awe master class by email to find out which class you would like to take instead. At the time of writing this, there is space available in all the other master classes except Advanced POV, which is full. The 5:30 time slot specifically has three choices: Next Level Fiction by James Scott Bell; Professional Screenwriting by Sleepless in Seattle writer Jeff Arch; and Welcome to Your Novel Rewrite with Robert J. Ray, of The Weekend Novelist fame. Plus there are four terrific classes available in the earlier slots, if you haven’t already selected from those. We are proud to have such a great line-up of master class teachers this year and are sure there is an alternative that will suit your needs.
Blue Pencil Café appointments currently scheduled with Lisa Rector will be re-scheduled with James Scott Bell. The time slot for these appointments will have to be changed in some cases, and I will email the new time to you. If you would prefer to switch your appointment to another available Blue Pencil author, please respond to the email when you receive it.
In other news, we’re excited to see registrations flying in at a great pace. Have you signed up yet? Register as early as you can for best shot at your first choice pitch and blue pencil appointments. The last day for early bird prices is September 30, so don’t delay!
We’re still looking for a successful detective to put all the evidence together and solve the mystery of what this year’s Saturday Night theme will be. Think you know? Email me for a shot at a great prize.
Remember poor kc dyer’s quest for reading material, and get your contest entries in by the September 10 deadline for a shot at $1000 prizes in all four categories. Guidelines are on our website at www.siwc.ca/contest/2010
As always, if you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, you can reach me by email at kathychung @ siwc dot ca.
