Surrey International Writers' Conference Newsletter
From conference coordinator Kathy:
This day we WRITE!
Hello, SiWC friends! Just a few more weeks and October will be here and, with it, the 19th annual Surrey International Writers’ Conference. We have lots of exciting news to share.
First of all, we are thrilled to announce our new conference motto, which you may have spotted in the subject line of this newsletter: This day we WRITE! Our sincere thanks to SiWC presenter and friend Robert Dugoni for creating it for us. It’s always our hope that what you learn at our conference will send you home eager to get words on the page, and think our motto sums up exactly the energy we want you to take home with you. You’ll find our motto on our conference t-shirts and in a couple of other places this year, too.
Have you sent in your entry to our writing contest yet? If so, congrats on being an early bird! If not, don’t delay! The deadline is Friday, September 9 at 4:00pm. You can find all the details on our website here. You don’t have to attend the conference to enter the contest. Any writer over 18 is welcome to enter, and we have over $4000 in prizes up for grabs, with $1000 first prizes in each category. Please spread the word this week. We’d hate for someone to miss out because they didn’t know about it.
Registration is filling up fast, with registrants coming from all over, which is always very exciting for us. Please be aware that our early bird prices are in place until September 15, 2011, so register by then and save a little money.
Wondering about master classes? At the time of writing this, we still have space available in all our master classes, including a few in the small-group class being taught this year by Jack Whyte. If you’d like to add a master class to your existing registration, call or email us and we’ll make sure you get the conference attendee rate. Classes do fill, so register soon!
Already registered? Don’t forget to book your hotel room early to get the conference rate. You can find the information on the hotel page of our site. In the next couple of weeks, we’ll post our traditional room share blog for those of you looking to make new friends and split costs. Stay tuned for that!
Our keynote speeches for this year have been confirmed. You can find all the details on our site here. I hope you’ll agree we have a pretty amazing line-up of speakers.
Lastly, for this time, I’m pleased to tell you about two new presenters on this year’s roster:
Sam Sykes, author of The Aeons’ Gate series, will be joining us in the Blue Pencil Café this year. If Sam seems to be the perfect fit for your work and you’d like to change your existing appointment to meet with him instead, email me and I’ll make the change for you.
We’re excited to welcome Stan Wakefield back to SiWC this year after a couple of years away. Stan Wakefield is an editor-at-large and independent media consultant for Amacom Books, and also maintains additional consultant and developmental editorial roles with over a dozen other major publishers. Prior to his entrance into the motion picture and electronic game and "edutainment" industries --- taking a fifteen year hiatus from publishing --- Wakefield served as an editor-in-chief for Pearson/Prentice-Hall. Stan will be taking pitch appointments, a great option for those of you looking to spread the net wide, with his relationships with so many different publishing houses.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to email us using the contact form on our site or directly to me at kathychung at siwc dot ca.
