Surrey International Writers' Conference Newsletter
From conference coordinator Kathy:
Lots of news to share about SiWC 2012, coming up in less than two months. Hard to believe how quickly it’s approaching!
First, three important dates to note:
September 14 is the deadline in our annual writing contest. You’ll find all the details about the contest and how to enter on our site here. In short, we offer $1000 first prizes in each of four categories: storytellers, non-fiction, poetry, and writing for young people. Lots of time to get your entry polished up and sent in, but don’t delay. September is coming up quickly.
September 15 is our early-bird rate deadline. Register by then and save! Here. Note that if you’re planning to register by PHONE, our last scheduled office hours before the early-bird deadline are 9am-noon on Wednesday, September 12. Online registration is available 24/7.
Have you booked your hotel room at the Sheraton Guildford yet? Our conference rate is available until mid-September or until the hotel is fully booked, and includes free in-room internet, normally a significant extra charge. Please book using our group rate. It’s helpful for the hotel to know who’s coming for the conference and also helps keep our registration costs as low as possible. Hotel booking information here.
We have confirmed all our keynote speakers for this year. And what a line-up it is. We’re excited! Morning keynotes, open to all attendees on days for which they’re registered, will be Jane Espenson, JJ Lee, and Diana Gabaldon. Afternoon and evening keynotes, open to full conference attendees only, will be Robert J Sawyer, Susanna Kearsley, and Donald Maass.
Booked a basic conference package or a single day but can’t stand the thought of missing a single one of those great speakers? Call our office at 778-322-6445 to upgrade your registration package.
As you probably know, 2012 marks the 20th annual SiWC, so our theme this year will be the Roaring ‘20s. Our Friday banquet will offer the chance for those full conference attendees who would like to dress up to come in era-appropriate costume. Not a costume person? No problem! Dress at our evening banquets ranges from the day’s conference clothes to dressier shirts, pants, skirts or dresses, to full-fledged theme costumes. Come as you like! We’ll be offering night owl events that connect to our theme, too.
At I write this, there is still (in some cases very limited) space available in all conference packages and master classes. Have you checked out our Thursday offerings? We have everything from a beginner intensive for those who aren’t ready for a master-level class to an advanced screenwriting-not-just-for-screenwriters intensive storytelling class, and more, including character-driven fiction, suspense, SF, and more. Have a look! Want to add a master class to your existing registration? Don’t do it online! Call our office at 778-322-6445 or email us to get the conference attendee rate.
As always, if you have questions, we’re here to help. You can contact us through our website or get in touch with me directly at kathychung at siwc dot ca.
See you soon!
