From conference coordinator Kathy:

Kathy ChungHappy September!

It's back-to-school time here in BC. This time of year always makes me want to go shopping for shiny new notebooks, their crisp new pages full of possibility, waiting for stories yet untold. This week also marks the beginning of our busiest season here at SIWC Central, and with it, lots of important news to share.

As a reminder, this year's conference runs October 25-27, with master classes on October 24.

Registration: If you haven't registered for SiWC 2013 yet, now is a great time to do so. Our early bird rates are available for all you not-quite-early birds until Sunday, September 15. Our secure online registration is easy to use and quick. You'll find it at http://www.siwc.ca/registration. Please note that for those of you who prefer to register on the phone, your last early-bird opportunity is before noon Pacific on Friday, September 13. After that, registration will continue until mid-October or until we sell out, whichever comes first.

Master Classes: Currently, there is space remaining in all but one of our master classes. We're also very pleased to note that we've added a new master class this week, in the 1:30 slot. If your interest lies in film, new media, or trans media, Seth Jaret's three-hour intensive is for you. If you'd like to add Seth's class or any other master class to your existing registration, please call our conference administrator to get the conference attendee rate. New registrants can register online when signing up for the conference. You'll find master class details at http://www.siwc.ca/schedule/masterclass.

Brand new to writing? During our master class day, kc dyer is offering a beginner intensive called Beginner's Swim. Want a crash course in all the basics before you dive into the conference? Check it out!

Writing Contest: Our annual writing contest deadline is Friday, September 13. Don't miss out! We offer prizes of $1000 to winners in all four categories, as well as publication in our annual writing contest anthology. Judges are successful, published authors, and if you win, they'll write a comment about your entry. Imagine having a blurb like that! Every single dollar of your entry fee supports the contest and the non-profit Surrey International Writers' Conference. Enter today!

Hotel: The Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel, our conference hotel, reports that there are still some rooms available for our group rate. Don't delay. A hotel sell-out is not unusual, and our SiWC 2013 group rate is available only until mid-September. Currently, they're offering a special double points promotion for you SPG members, too, with pre-registration, so even more reason to get booking now. Stay tuned on our blog for upcoming room share and ride share opportunities.

Theme: At long last, we're ready to reveal our theme for 2013. For those of you planning to wear a costume to the Friday night's banquet (totally optional, but you'll have lots of company), it's time to get planning. But first, you have to figure it out. The first correct answer in my email (kathychung at siwc dot ca) wins a book prize to pick up at our registration desk in October. What, you need a hint? It's right here, in black and white.

More soon!
