It’s true that everyone has a meaningful life story inside them, but not everyone knows how to tell it in a highly engaging, personal way. This is a workshop for anyone who is thinking of starting a memoir project but doesn’t know exactly where or how to begin.
The first half of the session will include a brief historical overview of the genre. We will explore the ethics of memoir writing; the challenges and limitations of the form, as well as various examples of excellent memoir openings. Through writing exercises, students will learn to compose a compelling opening for their own memoir. In the second half of the workshop, you will have the opportunity to discuss and share your work in smaller breakout groups. The last 15-20 minutes of the workshop will be a Q&A. You will leave with a draft of a memoir opening and a new group of writer friends.
