Helaine Becker is the bestselling author of more than 90 books for children and young adults, including the #1 Canadian national bestseller and “enduring Canadian Christmas classic” A Porcupine in a Pine Tree (Scholastic Canada) and the international bestseller Counting on Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Saved Apollo 13 (Henry Holt). She’s a multi-time winner of the Silver Birch Award and a two-time winner of the Lane Anderson Award for science writing for children. She has had three nonfiction titles recognized by the Junior Library Guild. Her books have been recipients of The Cook Prize, the Giverny Prize, Bank Street Best of the Year, Red Cedar Award, Eureka Award and a Sydney Taylor Notable Book. Her books have been translated into twelve languages and are sold in dozens of countries around the world. Her newest titles include Pirate Queen: A Story of Zheng Yi Sao (Groundwood), Emmy Noether: The Most Important Mathematician You Never Heard of (KCP), Alice and Gert (Owlkids) and The Canadian Kids Guide to Outdoor Fun (Scholastic Canada).

Helaine has toured four times for Canadian Children’s Book Week and has been a featured speaker at the World Science Festival, Vancouver Writers Fest, Tucson Festival of Books, the Frye Festival, ALOUD, Weaving Words and many more. She speaks to thousands of kids annually at schools and libraries all over the world, inspiring children to discover for themselves the super power of literacy.

A New York native, Helaine has lived happily with her husband in Toronto for more thana million years. (Her two grown sons, wisely, live elsewhere) She is also a certified pyrotechnician, so — KABOOM! — expect fireworks at any time.
